Papersmith is a quaint and friendly local gift shop in our hometown of Lake Charles, Louisiana. It’s the best shop in town for gifts that are both elegant and creative, and all things invitations and paper! (It’s also the exclusive Lake Charles retailer of Grove Street Press cards 🙂 ) When the proprietress, Sara, asked us to help her with some new branding work, we were very flattered — everyone agrees that she has impeccable taste, and it’s both fun and surreal to work with a store that you grew up going to!
Sara’s old logo was reflective of her tastes, but she thought it was starting to feel heavy and outdated.
Sara likes color and texture and the look of mix-and-match fonts, but she was ready to modernize her look, keeping up with today’s market. We wanted there to be some whimsical / organic elements to her new branding, so as not to veer too far from her natural tastes, but we wanted to present them in a contemporary format. We chose soft creams and a cool tones in order to do this, and searched long and hard to find a font that reads both formal, but hand-etched.

Before expanding her shop to its current state, Sara’s stationery and invitation business was previously named “La Grenouille” (French for frog), hence the frog in her old logo above. We liked the idea of honoring her many years in business and preserving a bit of continuity in her branding by working a small frog submark into her new look.

Working with Sara was an honor and a treat, and it is especially fun that we get to “visit” our work whenever we make a trip home!
